JOB SUMMARY

Tree Canada is expanding an exciting multi-faceted program, aiming to plant between 22 and 25 million trees in the next decade across Canada. We are seeking an energetic, resourceful, and highly organized leader to launch and manage the program and to inspire others to participate, while ensuring it is implemented on time and on budget. As Head of Program, you will be part of a passionate team of professionals who are dedicated to planting and nurturing trees in order to improve lives and address climate change.

In this role, you will oversee the planning and implementation of forest restoration and afforestation projects, including ensuring a reliable multi-year supply of tree stock and planting sites. You will provide leadership in identifying, selecting, and coordinating the funding and establishment of ecosystem and forest cover restoration projects.

You will work with Indigenous communities, conservation organizations, silvicultural foresters, municipalities and other stakeholders to support and implement tree planting projects.

You will help determine, quantify, and communicate the benefits of tree planting as a tool for climate change mitigation and adaptation as well as increasing ecosystem resilience.

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE

  • • Oversee all aspects of the National Greening Program (tree planting, supply chain management, stakeholder management, budget and revenue, communications, data collection, reporting, etc.)
  • • Oversee initial planting of between 2 to 3 million trees annually, with subsequent annual increases
  • • Secure multi-year agreements with planting partners and contractors
  • • Schedule and oversee planting verification audits and survival assessments

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE

Post-secondary (Master’s or Bachelor’s) degree in forestry, environmental studies, land use planning, or geography or a combination of education and experience in a related field.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES

  • • 5 to 7 years’ experience in project management and implementation
  • • 5 to 7 years’ experience working in the forestry and/or tree planting sector
  • • Strong background in silviculture
  • • Solid knowledge of tree biology with practical field experience
  • • Experience working with diverse stakeholders including municipalities, First Nations communities, universities, and the private sector
  • • Proficiency in both English and French highly desirable
  • • Strong interpersonal, problem-solving, and communication skills
  • • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • • Ability to work both independently and with a team in a collaborative environment
  • • Strong computer skills including proficiency with videoconferencing tools
  • • Knowledge and experience in geomatics such as Google Maps and ESRI ArcGIS an asset
  • • Respect for the values and differences that all members of a small team bring to an office environment; adaptable to different approaches and flexible to move in new directions

COMPENSATION

Tree Canada offers a competitive medical and dental benefits package and RRSP contributions matched by employer (up to 5% of salary). Salary will be commensurate with experience.

TERM

Full-time permanent position (37.5 hours/week).
