October 20, 2020 – Toronto, ON New York Fries is thrilled to announce Tree Canada as its new charitable partner in the brand’s latest step towards an environmentally-conscious dining experience. The collaboration will see an estimated 2,500 trees planted and nurtured across Canadian communities in the next year through Tree Canada’s National Greening Program.

This partnership comes on the heels of a federal government’s recent announcement detailing the ban on single-use plastics by the end of 2021, largely impacting the restaurant industry and its takeout containers.

“Tree Canada is dedicated to improving the lives of Canadians by planting trees and advocating for community greening,” says Danielle St-Aubin, CEO, Tree Canada. “We applaud New York Fries for their ongoing commitment to sustainable practices and for looking to plant trees as a way to mitigate the effects of climate change. We can’t wait to work closely with them and continue to make a positive impact across the country.”

New York Fries customers can also now make donations to Tree Canada at any New York Fries location across the country. For every $4 donated, one tree will be planted.

“Working with Tree Canada is a natural expansion of our brand’s commitment to sustainability. We’re excited that this partnership will directly help green Canadian communities,” says Alyssa Berenstein, Marketing Director, New York Fries. “In the last few months, to keep guests safe and minimize high-touch areas, some plastic disposables have temporarily returned. However, our commitment to sustainability is unwavering and we’re committed to doing what we can to make a greener Canada.”

This partnership is just the latest environmental initiative from New York Fries. In 2018, the brand eliminated the use of all plastic straws, in favour of paper. 2019 saw the introduction of new poutine packaging, made from 100% recyclable and compostable material. This change equated to the elimination of 6.7 million poutine cups and 1.5 million plastic poutine lids from Canadian waste bins each year. The brand continues to leverage this new eco-friendly packaging as earlier this year, migrating their fresh cut fries away from the iconic fry cups and into the new fry boxes.
