Strengthening the relationship between students and nature

Since 1992, Tree Canada has greened more than 720 schoolyards across the country. With the support of our sponsors, we’ve turned barren schoolyards into living outdoor classrooms, created arboretums for hands-on learning and helped reconnect students with the natural world.

Eligible projects receive up to $10,000 in funding to cover the cost of purchasing and planting trees and shrubs, site preparation, tree maintenance, planting materials and developing education materials.

How It Works

After a grant is awarded, Tree Canada offers logistical support from our national office and on-the-ground support from one of our community advisors. These specialists provide guidance, support and recommendations to help ensure the success of your project.

Application Period

Grant applications are accepted from October to early December the year before project implementation. We inform applicants by the following March if their project has received a grant or no, and most projects are expected to be completed that same year.

Tree Canada supports greening projects wherever learning takes place, on educational institution properties such as elementary or primary schools, high schools, universities, colleges and training centers across Canada.

Hear from a Past Grant Recipient

“The Tree Canada grant program was beneficial not only because it provided us with much needed additional funding to supplement the Ecole Sir William Osler nature playground and outdoor classroom project, but also because of the expertise, detailed advice and support provided throughout all the stages of the project. Our school and neighbourhood communities are the ultimate beneficiaries – we are so grateful to have received the Tree Canada grant and look forward to the many years of beauty, shade and shelter the trees they have made possible to purchase will provide.”
