The Arbor Day Foundation Recognizes 15 cities in Canada as Tree Cities of the World

These cities in Canada have shown a commitment towards community forestry.

Lincoln, Nebraska – April 22, 2021 – The Arbor Day Foundation today recognized 15 Canadian cities as Tree Cities of the World. Tree Cities of the World is a program founded by The Arbor Day Foundation and the United Nations’ Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) to recognize cities around the globe that have committed to creating and maintaining green spaces in their community. Through this recognition, major cities all across the USA will join a network of like-minded communities who recognize the importance of planting trees to contribute to their urban tree canopy.

“We applaud all of the cities that have earned Tree City designation,” said Dan Lambe, president, Arbor Day Foundation. “They are leaders when it comes to planning and managing their urban forests. Many of the cities being recognized have gone above and beyond to use trees as part of their green infrastructure. This distinction is a celebration of their creativity and sustainability in creating healthier urban spaces.”

When a community joins Tree Cities of the World, they show their willingness to be a sustainability and urban forestry leader. Planting trees in a metropolitan area come with a myriad of benefits past the recognition of this program. Increasing the number of trees in a community can help reduce costs for energy, stormwater management, and erosion control. The program provides a network of like-minded city leaders in urban forestry to celebrate and share best practices to cultivate greenery in the community.

Tree Cities of the World aims to create more green spaces in urban areas by recognizing the cities that do it well. Its shared vision is to connect cities around the world in a new network dedicated to adopting the most successful approaches to managing urban trees and forests.
