About

As one of the most prestigious events for the international screen industry, the Banff World Media Festival (BANFF) has been bringing the world’s top creators, producers, showrunners, talent, networks, studios, streamers, and media companies together in the majestic Canadian Rockies for 45 years.

To give back to the beautiful land that the Festival takes place on, BANFF, in partnership with Tree Canada, has committed to support afforestation and reforestation efforts in Alberta, Canada through the National Greening Program.

We are proud to continue “The Banff World Media Festival’s Legacy Forest” fundraiser, with a goal of planting 4,500 trees by June 2026.

Piikani Nation Project
Location: near Brocket, Alberta

Situated in the Oldman River watershed, this project aims to reduce erosion, restore native cottonwood ecosystems, and protect endangered fish and terrestrial wildlife habitat. It also helps maintain water quality and preserves land for traditional Piikani practices such as hunting, fishing, and gathering.

We’ve already planted the first 818 trees* and are inviting your support to help us reach our target. Launched in 2024, the initiative has supported two meaningful reforestation projects in Alberta:

  • The Piikani Nation Project, focused on restoring critical habitat and enhancing watershed health in the Oldman River region, while also supporting traditional land use practices within the Piikani community. Thanks to the donors of the 2024 BANFF World Media Festival, 409 trees were planted.
  • The Coyote Lake Lodge Project, which involved riparian restoration to stabilize streambanks, improve water quality, and strengthen habitat connectivity through wildlife corridors and cooler aquatic environments. 409 trees were planted last year thanks to the generous donors of the BANFF World Media Festival. This project has been completed in 2024.

In 2025, planting will continue exclusively at the Piikani Nation site, where your contributions will directly support long-term environmental and cultural resilience.

“With the help of committed partners such as BANFF, we are able to create more resilient ecosystems and healthier communities across Canada. We thank them for helping us make a difference,” said Nicole Hurtubise, CEO of Tree Canada

Thank you for planting trees in The Banff World Media Festival’s Legacy Forest!
And great news! In 2025, the federal government will continue to match every tree donated through Tree Canada’s National Greening Program, multiplying your impact even further.
