Celebrate 10 Years with 10 Tree-mendous Facts about National Tree Day

In honour of the 10th anniversary of National Tree Day, we’ve created a list of ten tree-mendous facts about National Tree Day!

We hope that through reading this list, you learn more about the importance and impact of National Tree Day across Canada and feel inspired to join in our celebrations this year!

1. On March 2, 2011, the House of Commons passed Motion-575 to declare the Wednesday of National Forest Week, as National Tree Day!

2. Wednesday, September 21, 2011, marked the first National Tree Day in Canada. So, this year, we are celebrating National Tree Day’s 10-year anniversary!

3. 2020 was the first time we couldn’t organize community planting events for National Tree Day.

4. In 2017, we celebrated 25 years of Tree Canada, Canada’s leading national tree planting organization, by planting our 82 millionth tree in Canada on National Tree Day.

5. On September 24, 2014, Tree Canada achieved a new world record for the “Longest Tree Hug,” as declared by Guinness World Records. Adrina Bardekjian hugged a tree for a total of 480 minutes (8 hours). This new record was set at Montreal’s Mount Royal Park in celebration of National Tree Day.

6. Since 2011, Tree Canada has planted almost 8,000 trees in celebration of National Tree Day!

7. Since 2011, Tree Canada has hosted over 80 National Tree Day celebration events!

8. Since 2011, Tree Canada has been happy to engage with over 28,000 Canadians to celebrate National Tree Day!

9. Since 2011, Tree Canada has planted over 40 different species of trees for National Tree Day. Including red maple, red oak, white pine, American basswood, white birch, balsam poplar, and white spruce, to name a few.

10. This year, Tree Canada will be planting 3,000 trees to celebrate NTD! The largest number of trees, in one year, since 2011.
