Up to $50,000 for Your Greening Project

The Hydro-Québec Greening Fund helps municipalities and organizations with their greening initiatives by offering up to $50,000 in financial assistance per project.

Hydro-Québec has tasked Tree Canada with managing its new program. Selected applicants will receive Tree Canada’s applicant support and urban and rural greening expertise.

Program Objectives

Promote biodiversity and improve the tree canopy
Increase resilience to climate change
Improve the living environment of communities
Support innovation in greening and sustainability

Eligibility Conditions

To be eligible, proposed initiatives must involve greening and work toward at least one of the above objectives. 

Initiatives must be submitted by:

  • A municipality
  • The council of an Indigenous nation
  • A legally constituted organization, for example:

    • An NPO
    • An Indigenous organization
    • A school service centre or public school
    • The Fédération de l’Union des producteurs agricoles
    • A Club-conseil en agroenvironnement

Greening projects can be carried out in urban, natural or rural agricultural environments, on public or private property (with the landowner’s permission).

Project Examples:

  • Planting native trees to increase the diversity of tree species adapted to local conditions
  • Improving farmland resilience through the use of windbreaks and riparian buffer strips
  • Greening schoolyards
  • Implementing developments that help disseminate Indigenous practices and know-how
  • Improving the energy efficiency of neighbourhoods, strategic tree planting

To be eligible, proposed initiatives must involve greening work.

The following initiatives do not qualify:

  • Strategic planning, studies or inventories
  • Maintenance work on existing facilities or infrastructure
  • Projects carried out for private, commercial or industrial purposes

Eligible costs include plant purchases, shipping and planting. A maximum of 15% of the allocated amount can be used for professional services (landscape architecture, plans and specifications, etc.). Applicants are responsible for all application costs, including bids and professional fees for design, approvals and maintenance.

For each funding cycle, Tree Canada will conduct an initial evaluation of each application based on the following objectives and criteria:

  • Meeting the eligibility criteria
  • Meeting at least one of the Greening Fund’s objectives
  • Compliance with the general principles of the Greening Fund, including:
    • collective interest (the project must meet common needs and benefit the community)
    • sustainability (the results must be durable and maintained over the long term)
    • positive and tangible benefits (e.g., air quality, heat island reduction, green spaces)
    • public involvement and participation preferable (calling on local citizens or organizations)
  • Feasibility
  • Communications and visibility

Following the initial evaluation, a selection committee will analyze the pre-selected projects and their accompanying documents in order to make a final selection. Project selection will promote diversity and equity, taking into account the applicants’ profile, the project location and the previous contributions obtained.

No, the Greening Fund targets projects that are not located on Hydro-Québec’s operational infrastructure (e.g., substations, transmission lines, power plants).

However, projects near electrical infrastructure (such as power distribution lines) must respect the prescribed clearances.
