Coordinator, Research and Engagement

The Research and Engagement Coordinator supports and enhances Tree Canada’s research partnerships, professional engagement objectives, and education goals.

Reports to: Director, Research and Engagement

Salary range: $45,000 to $65,000

Location: National Capital Region or Greater Toronto Area preferred. Remote candidates will be considered.

Language requirement: English with French being an asset.

Tree Canada is the only national non-profit organization dedicated to planting and nurturing trees in rural and urban environments, in every province across the country. We help to grow Canada’s tree canopy through our programs, research, and engagement efforts and by offering grants to communities and schools. We are thought-leaders and capacity-builders, collaborating with a network of industry experts, academics, and other non-profits to deepen community knowledge and help municipalities plan and sustain local canopy.

Job Summary

The Research and Engagement Coordinator supports and enhances Tree Canada’s research partnerships, professional engagement objectives, and education goals. Bringing together urban forestry research and practice, they facilitate knowledge sharing and engagement-related activities for urban forestry professionals across Canada.

The Coordinator will steward positive and efficient working relationships with internal staff and external collaborators such as volunteer steering committee members and others who align and intersect with the work of the Research and Engagement department.

The Research and Engagement Coordinator is a valued member of Tree Canada’s urban forestry team. They play an active role in developing new initiatives to meet the department’s goals and KPIs regarding thought leadership, social equity, education, and professional engagement. They also improve organizational systems and drive efficiencies by streamlining administration, logistics, and relationship management.

 

Areas of Responsibility:

Engagement activities (50%)

  • Support the delivery of the Canadian Urban Forest Conference (CUFC) program, including all administrative duties.
  • Support the delivery of the Canadian Urban Forest Network (CUFN) program, including all administrative duties.
  • Coordinate series of articles, with external authors, on timely urban forestry topics and the next CUFC theme.
  • Take meeting minutes, ensure correspondence follow-ups, and ensure that all program and project files are maintained.
  • Support coordination of speakers for the national e-lecture series webinars.
  • Support the delivery of the Canadian Urban Forest Awards (CUFA) program in collaboration with the Communications team, including mobilizing a review committee.
  • Liaise with the Communications team to provide insight on current R&E activities that may be profiled on Tree Canada platforms, including drafting R&E stories to share.

Research activities (30%)

  • Support coordination of internal research investigations to improve Tree Canada’s programs and operations, including scoping projects, developing timelines, and finding contractors.
  • Collect materials and coordinate online research for existing urban forestry resources that may be applied in a Canadian context.
  • Support internal knowledge sharing on current urban forestry discourses, dialogues, research trends, and operational best practices.
  • Liaise with the Development team to provide insight on current R&E activities that may be used for sponsorship pitches.

Education (10%)

  • Support the development of organizational education goals.
  • Support the development of presentation content for conferences and workshops, including research results, collaborations, and project impacts.

Other (10%)

  • Help operationalize business and administrative processes that support Research and Engagement activities and objectives.
  • Ensure all project-related updates are communicated clearly to senior leadership and external partners where appropriate.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Demonstrated passion and interest about the environment, forests, and sustainable urban communities, and willingness to learn.
  • Demonstrated success in coordinating and maintaining trust and positive relationships with diverse stakeholders.
  • Excellent administrative skills.
  • Advanced computer skills including proficiency with videoconferencing tools, Dropbox, MS Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, Teams, OneDrive, PowerPoint).
  • An active listener who communicates clearly, respectfully, and effectively, and who inspires collaborative work among colleagues, students, volunteers, and collaborators.
  • Excellent oral and written communications skills.
  • Demonstrated professionalism, integrity, and tact.
  • Strong problem-solving ability with creative, innovative, and critical thinking skills.
  • Ability to work both independently and with a collaborative team in a fast-paced environment.
  • Commitment to the work and values of Tree Canada, in particular a passion for the environment and a belief that organizations and individuals can and do improve lives by planting trees and addressing climate change.

Education and Experience

Post-secondary education in environmental studies or a closely related field to the activities of the position.

Minimum three to five years experience working in project coordination in an environmental not-for-profit organization with diverse stakeholders including municipalities, universities, and corporations. Equivalencies in education and experience will be considered.
