About Tree Canada

Since 1992, Tree Canada has worked relentlessly to grow Canada’s tree canopy through our greening programs, research, and engagement efforts. We are the only national non-profit organization dedicated to planting and nurturing trees in rural and urban environments. Our track record of collaborating with all levels of government, the urban forestry sector, business partners, and community groups uniquely positions us to engage Canadians in the fight against climate change. Together we plant millions of trees each year, helping to grow resilient ecosystems and healthier, greener communities across Canada.

About the Position

Reporting to the Chief Administration Officer, the Director of IT will be responsible for optimizing and integrating digital systems, overseeing cybersecurity, and establishing a comprehensive IT strategy that enhances efficiency, data governance, and impact measurement. You will begin by overseeing the implementation of Salesforce and Sage Intacct, ensuring these platforms are effectively integrated and leveraged to streamline operations and improve reporting capabilities. The role will also be responsible for strengthening cybersecurity protocols, developing data governance policies, and ensuring the organization is equipped with modern IT solutions to support its mission. Additionally, in working with the programs team, you will assess and implement future technological needs, such as GIS mapping, satellite imagery, and AI-driven impact measurement tools, to enhance Tree Canada’s ability to monitor and report on its large-scale reforestation and urban greening initiatives.

Beyond system implementation, the Director will play a crucial role in driving technology-driven impact reporting and stakeholder engagement. As Tree Canada shifts away from only tree count metrics to a more sophisticated biodiversity and climate impact model, the Director will lead efforts to integrate advanced data visualization, automated reporting, and AI-supported monitoring to provide donors, corporate sponsors, and government partners with transparent, evidence-based insights into the success of Tree Canada’s reforestation projects. To achieve this, you will need to consolidate and standardize data from multiple sources, ensuring accuracy and addressing inconsistencies that stem from siloed systems and historical gaps in data management. The ability to unify financial, donor, and environmental impact data into a cohesive and compelling digital story will be a game-changer for Tree Canada’s fundraising and partnership development.

Key responsibilities include working closely with the Senior Leadership Team to guide decisions on IT priorities and investments, implementing cost-effective technology solutions, establishing key policies on data management, data sharing, and AI, while maintaining operational excellence across information management and technology systems. As Director, you will provide insights and recommendations that align technology initiatives with Tree Canada’s strategic goals, ensuring IM and IT solutions not only support internal efficiencies but also enhance the organization’s ability to communicate its impact to external stakeholders. Data management will be a significant and ongoing aspect of this role, requiring both high-level strategy and hands-on involvement in structuring, maintaining, and improving data integrity. This role requires balancing innovation with practicality, ensuring that Tree Canada’s technology infrastructure is robust, efficient, and adaptable for future growth.

Finally, in this hands-on role, you will balance strategic thinking and implementation, leading internally and externally with technology partners to ensure seamless IT operations. You will take on impactful projects that address the organization’s current needs while building scalable solutions for future growth. With a focus on change management, process and policy development, software architecture, integration, and future-ready solutions, this role presents an opportunity for an experienced IT leader to shape the organization’s digital future.

Is This For You?

You are a strategic and hands-on technology leader who thrives in a multifaceted role where you can drive digital transformation while optimizing day-to-day IT operations. With a strong foundation in IT strategy, system implementation, and data governance, you are ready to take on a leadership role that allows you to shape the future of an organization dedicated to environmental sustainability and reforestation.

Your background likely includes experience leading IM or IT teams and technology projects in a corporate, profit or non-profit, mission-driven, or resource-conscious environment. You have expertise in areas such as cloud-based system implementation, UX, membership platforms, cybersecurity, and data management, and you are comfortable working across multiple platforms, including CRM (Salesforce) and financial management systems (Sage Intacct). You are adept at navigating complex system integrations, ensuring that technology solutions are both cost-effective and scalable. As a skilled communicator and collaborator, you excel at building relationships with senior leadership, external vendors, and internal teams, ensuring that IT priorities align with organizational goals.

As a leader, you embrace both strategy and execution, bringing a player-coach mentality where you are equally comfortable setting IT direction as you are rolling up your sleeves to solve technical challenges. You take pride in mentoring and empowering your team, fostering a culture of continuous learning and problem-solving. You are adaptable, resourceful, and skilled at managing competing priorities in a fast-growing, evolving organization. Above all, you are motivated by the opportunity to leverage technology to enhance environmental impact, strengthen Tree Canada’s ability to tell its story, and support reforestation efforts across the country.
