About the Program

The CN EcoConnexions – From the Ground Up program, sponsored by CN in partnership with Tree Canada, provides funding to support sustainable community tree planting and greening initiatives for Canadian municipalities and Indigenous communities across the country. From 2012 to 2023, this program has awarded 253 projects and contributed to the planting of over 135,612 trees in Canada.

In 2024, CN generously contributed $10,000 grants to 45 municipal applicants of Tree Canada’s Community Tree Grants program. The trees planted will have a lasting impact for generations to come.

How It Works

Once a grant is awarded, Tree Canada experts work closely with communities to make each project an opportunity for residents to gather and celebrate the benefits of trees and urban green spaces.

Recipient communities can use the grant funding to contribute to various types of local planting projects, including:

  • Growing their urban forests
  • Transforming community spaces, including schools
  • Traffic calming and safety
  • Urban heat island reduction
  • Park creation or restoration
  • Adding to or improving naturalized areas

Hear from a Past Grant Recipient

“The City of Kamloops resides in the interior of British Columbia in a semi-arid climate. We typically have hot dry summers and mild snowy winters. 2021 has been a year with record high temperatures and fires within the municipal boundary. The funding partnership through the CN EcoConnexions Program allowed us to add large caliper shade trees to a number of our parks. These trees will provide much needed shade and improve user experience especially during our hot summers. Thank you, CN, for your commitment to improving the communities across Canada!”
