Trends in Canada’s Urban Forests

The overall objective of this report is to provide detailed and specific information on the level of urban forestry and arboricultural activities carried out in Canadian municipalities; improve our understanding of knowledge gaps and associated science and research activities; and understand the needs of municipalities to further develop the benefits of the urban forest.

A Brief Historical Perspective of Urban Forests in Canada

In recent years, a greater amount of interest has been in expressed in urban forests – partly as a result of increasing urbanization but also due to new threats including the invasive insect, emerald ash borer. Urban forests in Canada have been dominated by three themes: superficial support by the provincial and federal governments, individuals’ commitment to developing urban forests of excellence, and awareness and action fueled by natural disaster.

Canadian Urban Forest Strategy (2013-2018)

The Canadian Urban Forest Strategy (CUFS) was first articulated in 2006 as a strategic initiative of Canada’s urban forest practitioners including: foresters, managers, arborists, planners, community workers and politicians. It coincided with Canada’s National Forest Strategy (1988-2008) a government, NGO and private sector coalition whose aim was to move Canada towards forest sustainability. The final iteration (2003-2008) of the National Forest Strategy included a section on urban forests.

What Trees Can Do to Reduce Atmospheric C02

Our truck or SUV can, at times, be just like a best friend, always there for us. So too is another friend, certainly not as widely used but no less important to us ... and to our car. A tree! Trees can be a car’s best friend because they help remove atmospheric CO2 from the air.

A Guide To Community Tree Planting And Care

Nowhere do trees need more “TLC” than in our towns and cities where they do so much to benefits all of us. The more we plant and care for trees in our “urban forests” the more we help our environment. This guide is designed to help all of us learn how to plant and care for trees in our community.
