Carbon Calculator Methodology
Tree Canada’s carbon calculator uses conservative estimates. Emissions factors are national or provincial averages. Tree Canada used the following sources to ensure calculations are not underestimated:
Energy Use
Energy use emissions factors were referenced from:
- National Inventory Report (1990-2011) Greenhouse Gas Sources and Sinks in Canada, Ministry of Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC), publications.gc.ca/collections/collection_2013/ec/En81-4-2011-2-eng.pdf
Air Transport
Flight emission factors were referenced from:
- 2010 Guidelines to Defra/DECC’s GHG Conversion Factors for Company Reporting DEFRA, www.defra.gov.uk/environment/economy/business-efficiency/reporting/
Road Transport
Vehicle emissions factors were referenced from:
- National Inventory Report (1990-2011) Greenhouse Gas Sources and Sinks in Canada, Ministry of Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC), publications.gc.ca/collections/collection_2013/ec/En81-4-2011-2-eng.pdf
- Fuel consumption ratings by model year, Natural Resources Canada, www.nrcan.gc.ca/energy/efficiency/11938
Other Transport
Other transport emissions factors were referenced from:
- 2010 Guidelines to Defra / DECC’s GHG Conversion Factors for Company Reporting DEFRA, www.defra.gov.uk/environment/economy/business-efficiency/reporting/
