National Tree Day Events
ARVIDA ARBORETUM

Event Description
In front of the historic heritage Riverside Elementary School (formerly Arvida Elementary School since 1927 and later changed to Saguenay Valley), an Arvida arboretum was initiated to remember the families and their children who attended this special place, and the Alcan aluminum capital of the world at one time. A committee is working to have Arvida recognized by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site.
During Tree Day/Week, two trees will be planted here to further beautify the renovated school: one tree for Captain George Swales’ family; he served in WWII and became the Alcan Port Alfred shipping boss. His daughter, Penny, taught at the school. The second tree will be for Judy Flannery (née Mason), who also taught at the school.
