Register NowEvent Description
The community is invited to join Nikibii Dawadinna Giigwag to plant 100 native trees and shurbs to contribute to the ecological restoration of a former airfield and industrial lands at the Downsview Park. Nikibii Dawadinna Giigwag (Anishinaabemowin for “flooded valley healing”) is a unique land-based program for Indigenous Youth (ages 15-20) that provides fulltime summer employment, mentorship, and pathway to postsecondary education in fields related to design and the environment. NDG weaves together cultural teachings with landscape architecture and ecological conservation and provides high school co-op placement credits in partnership with the Toronto District School Board Urban Indigenous Education Centre (TDSB–UIEC). Youth work with a range of community partners on the research, design, and realization of Indigenous place-keeping projects, ranging from medicine gardens to urban agriculture, ecological restoration, food forests, and seed keeping.
